‘Fast & Furious’ Franchise To End After Two More Films Directed By Justin Lin

Twenty years after its inception, the Fast & Furious film franchise is tragically coming to an end. One of the earliest films hit hard by the global COVID-19 pandemic, F9 will now premiere on May 28, 2021. However, as first reported by Deadline, Universal Pictures will reportedly close the book on Fast & Furious with the upcoming tenth and eleventh installments.
Justin Lin will return to direct the final two films that will shoot back-to-back. Series patriarch Vin Deisel will produce the picture as well. Involving Lin in the conclusion of the franchise is certainly appropriate following his work on the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and ninth films. With little known about F9 at this time, it is far too early to imagine what chapters ten and eleven will look like. However, history shows that the Fast movies continue to get bigger and more action-packed with every new inclusion.

While nothing is confirmed at the time of this writing, it is likely Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Sung Kang will reprise their roles in the final two pictures. Additional appearances may also include Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson, John Cena, Helen Mirren, and Charlize Theron. It is also safe to assume the final two films will continue to pay tribute to the late Paul Walker as well.
The franchise also includes short films, an animated television series, live shows, video games, and theme park attractions. The 2019 spinoff film, Hobbs & Shaw, stars the aforementioned Johnson and Statham. Previously, Johnson claimed a sequel to the spinoff was in the works. However, it remains unclear if this new announcement will affect Hobbs & Shaw 2 in any way. Overall, the series touts a combined gross of over $5.8 billion worldwide. This staggering number makes it Universal’s biggest franchise, and the tenth highest-grossing film series ever.
