‘Ball & Chain’: Dwayne Johnson & Emily Blunt Set For New Superhero Movie

Even before their latest Disney film Jungle Cruise hits theaters, Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt have proven to be a winning combination. So much so that, as first reported by Deadline, the duo have already signed on to star in a new take on the superhero film genre.

Johnson and Blunt will reunite for Ball & Chain. The film will reportedly focus on a bickering married couple who, by chance, receive superpowers. However, in order for their powers to reach maximum potential, they must be able to put their differences aside and get along. The movie will be based on the 4-part comic book of the same name published in 1999. It was written by Scott Lobdell and illustrated by Alé Garza and Richard Bennett. Additionally, the movie will be Blunt’s first foray into the superhero genre, who is often fan-cast in these roles alongside her husband John Krasinksi.

The script will be taken care of by Emily Gordon (The Big Sick). The screenwriter has previously been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 2018. Moreover, Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions will produce the film. At this time, it is still being shopped around to a bevy of movie studios for distribution. However, the initial report notes that Netflix could emerge as the victor in that bidding war.

Emily Blunt is one of the most sought-after performers in the world. Her recent turns in films like A Quiet Place and Mary Poppins Returns have displayed her talent and acting range. Although, before all of that, Blunt is a multiple-time Golden Globe and SAG Award winner. Next, the actress will appear alongside Johnson in Jungle Cruise and Krasinski in A Quiet Place II.

Johnson remains one of the busiest men in Hollywood. In addition to his upcoming DCEU film Black Adam and the development of Hobbs & Shaw 2, the actor will produce an NBC series based on his own life titled Young Rock. Additionally, Johnson remains loyal to his professional wrestling roots while actively developing a biopic about the 16-time World Champion Ric Flair.
