Amazon Picks Up ‘Heads Of State’ Starring Idris Elba & John Cena

Over the last few months, Amazon Studios positioned itself as a front runner in streaming wars. Following 2020 releases like Dave Bautista’s My Spy and a bevy of nominations at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, the streamer continues to look towards the future with a compelling slate. In addition to films and shows starring Awkwafina and Chris Pratt, Deadline reports the studio recently acquired the rights for a new thriller titled Heads of State.
The highly sought after picture will reportedly star The Suicide Squad stars Idris Elba and John Cena. Following a Zoom pitch featuring the megastars and Amazon Studios, the production company was quick to snatch the film off the market. Heads of State is written by screenwriter Harrison Query (War Party) and details on the plot remain scarce. However, per the initial report, the film will borrow elements from high octane ’90s action flicks like Air Force One. Additionally, the two actors will be placed in an odd couple situation where the stakes are extremely high a la Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in Hobbs & Shaw.

Amazon will look to begin the film’s production in the coming months. The Safran Company’s Peter Safran (Shazam!) and John Rickard (Rampage) will come aboard the picture as executive producers. Moreover, Max Jacoby (Dust) will co-produce as well. This will be the next collaboration between John Cena and the Safran Company following James Gunn’s recently-announced Peacemaker HBO Max TV series.
The multi-talented Idris Elba touts impressive dramatic and musical skills in the BBC Once series Luther and the controversial Cats. Up next, Elba will star as Bloodsport in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad as well as star in Apple TV’s untitled spy/romance thriller and Universal Pictures’ Beast. On the other hand, John Cena is a former 16-time WWE World Champion. Following a transition from the ring to the big screen, Cena continues to stand out with roles in Bumblebee and Dolittle. Up next, the actor will star in the ninth Fast & Furious film as Jakob Toretto.
