Awkwafina & Karen Gillan To Star In Action-Comedy ‘Shelly’ From Amazon Studios

Over the last few months, Amazon Studios positioned itself as a front runner in streaming wars. Its upcoming projects include the George Clooney-directed The Tender Bar and a Randall Park/Daniel Dae Kim-starring heist film. According to Deadline, the studio acquired the rights to distribute an action-comedy titled Shelly starring Jumanji: The Next Level stars Awkwafina and Karen Gillan.
The film’s script is a collaboration between screenwriters by Michael Doneger (The Escort) and Liz Storm (Awkward Expressions of Love). Moreover, Jude Weng is on-board to direct the upcoming feature. Weng is a fast-rising filmmaker whose recent directing gigs include episodes of hit shows like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, The Good Place, and Black-ish.

The plot focuses on a young woman named Shelly. Played by Awkwafina, Shelly is tormented in high school and flees her hometown following a cruel Prom night prank. For the next decade, Shelly trains and serves as an ice-cold hit-woman for hire. Her latest job leads her back to the hometown she fled to target her former bully Dianna Park, played by Gillan. However, as the old adage goes: “time heals all”. Shelly and Donne become friends as Shelly gets her first glimpse of running with the in-crowd. The action-comedy will mix elements similar to Mean Girls and HBO’s Barry as they run from hitmen coming to eliminate them both.
The film will be financed and distributed by Amazon with Ian Bryce (Return of the Jedi) on-board to executive produce.
Following an award-winning turn in the celebrated film The Farewell, Awkwafina continues to bolster her already impressive résumé. Up next for the actress is starring roles in Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Raya and the Last Dragon, and Marvel’s Shang Chi. Meanwhile, her Jumanji co-star Karen Gillan plays a big role as Nebula in Avengers: Endgame. She last appeared alongside Harrison Ford in The Call of the Wild and she will next star in the assassin thriller Gunpowder Milkshake.
