Chlöe Bailey, Olivia Colman, & Woody Harrelson To Star In Adaptation Of Bob Dylan Musical ‘Girl From The North Country’
With upcoming musical movie adaptations like The Color Purple and Wicked getting people excited, another major stage production will also be getting the big screen treatment. As first reported by Variety, a movie adaptation of the Laurence Olivier Award-winning musical Girl From the North Country is officially in the works at Blueprint Pictures.
Per the initial report, Grammy-nominated singer Chlöe Bailey is on board to star in the upcoming film alongside Oscar winner Olivia Colman and movie legend Woody Harrelson. Conor McPherson, the playwright responsible for the original Broadway show will write and direct the film. The musical notably features a slew of hit Bob Dylan songs including “Forever Young” and “Like a Rolling Stone.”
In a statement, Bob Dylan himself gives the upcoming adaption his glowing blessing.
“To be associated with Conor is one of the highlights of my professional life,” Dylan says. “It goes without saying the man is a genius for putting this thing together and I’m thrilled to be a part of the experience. My songs couldn’t be in better hands. The play had me crying at the end. I can’t even say why. When the curtain came down, I was stunned. I really was.”
Girl From the North Country takes place in Duluth, Minnesota during the Great Depression in 1934. Harrelson will play proprietor Nick Laine who must contend with his wife Elizabeth (Colman) as she suffers from dementia. Additionally, the couple is simultaneously dealing with the bank foreclosing on their home while their adopted daughter Marianne (Bailey) hides a dark, unexplainable secret. The story takes a sudden turn with escaped convict Joe Scott (Doctor Who star Tosin Cole) seeking shelter in their guest house and developing a relationship with Marianne.
