Danielle Brooks, Halle Bailey, Corey Hawkins, & More Round Out The Cast Of ‘The Color Purple’

One of the most celebrated musicals of all time is coming back to the silver screen in a big way. As first revealed by Oprah Winfrey to Vanity Fair, the upcoming adaptation of The Color Purple will begin production soon and touts an incredibly impressive cast.
Per the official interview with Winfrey, American Idol winner Fantasia Taylor will star as Celie, the central character in the musical. Next, the legendary Colman Domingo will portray Mister with Grammy nominee Halle Bailey appearing as Nettie. Taraji P. Henson will portray Shug Avery, In The Heights standout, Corey Hawkins is playing Harpo while Peacemaker‘s Danielle Brooks is Sofia. Finally, Grammy and Oscar winner H.E.R. rounds out the cast as Squeak.
Blitz Bazawule (Beyoncé’s Black Is King) will direct the feature. Screenwriter Marcus Gardley (The Chi) is adapting the story for the film. Moreover, Winfrey and Scott Sanders are serving as executive producers. Within the story, Winfrey expresses her excitement to bring the musical back to life.

“This ain’t your mama’s Color Purple,” says Oprah Winfrey. “It has been a vehicle for magic and purpose in my life,” Winfrey says. “I don’t know anybody who’s ever been associated with it whose life didn’t get enhanced. Everything comes from the original words of Alice Walker, which were grounded in love, really. Love of this community. Love of these people and love of those characters. And that just gets passed on and passed on and passed on. I can’t wait to see this next evolvement, which is not attached to having done it the way we’ve always done it.”
The Color Purple is a 1982 novel by American author Alice Walker. Notably, the book won the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award for Fiction. Moreover, Steven Spielberg directs The 1985 American film adaptation which touts eleven Academy Award nominations. The film documents the traumas and gradual triumph of Celie, a Black teenager raised in rural isolation in Georgia.
