2021 has been extremely fruitful for director Zack Snyder. Following the success of Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Army of the Dead, the filmmaker is apparently beginning work on his next couple of projects. As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder’s next endeavor will be an epic sci-fi fantasy titled Rebel Moon.
Snyder will write and direct the feature that will be produced and distributed by Netflix. Previously, Full Circle Cinema reported that Zack and Deborah Snyder were developing a western/sci-fi hybrid film and it appears Rebel Moon is that venture. In a statement, Snyder reveals his inspiration and passion for the movie’s plot.
“This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” Snyder says. “It’s my love of sci-if and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out. I’ve spent the last two or three years building out this universe. Every corner has to be painted in. I’ve been doing designs, constantly drawing and really cultivating its fertile ground to make this world fully realized.”

The film takes place in a peaceful colony out on the edge of the galaxy. When the armies of a tyrant named Balisarius threaten the community, desperate citizens dispatch a young woman to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help make a stand. In addition to writing and directing, Snyder will produce alongside his wife and producing partner Deborah Snyder. Additionally, Wesley Coller (Army of the Dead) and Eric Newman (Dawn of the Dead) will produce with Sarah Bowen (Bright) executive producing.
