CM Punk Joins Stephen Amell In Pro Wrestling Drama Series ‘Heels’

Following the series finale of The CW’s Arrow, Stephen Amell quickly joined the cast of the upcoming professional wrestling series in the works for Starz called Heels. While the series is currently in production, it appears Amell is recruiting one of the most prolific pro wrestlers in history for the show. As first revealed by Amell on social media, five-time WWE World Champion CM Punk is joining the cast of Heels.
CM Punk, real name Phillip Brooks, will reportedly portray a rival character to Amell’s wrestling persona Jack Spade. CM Punk made his exit from the WWE back in 2014 and has distanced himself from the world of wrestling in the years since. However, the performer briefly appeared on Fox Sports’ talk show WWE Backstage as an analyst. In addition to Amell, the cast of Heels also includes Hunger Games star Alexander Ludwig and former NFL linebacker James Harrison. Amell has also enlisted the assistance of well-known wrestlers like Cody Rhodes, Doc Gallows, and Stevie Richards for the show’s production.

The eight-episode series was written by Michael Waldron, who is currently working on the Disney+ series Loki. The series will focus on the lives of independent professional wrestlers hoping to make it big. It will follow a family-owned wrestling promotion Duffy Wrestling Association in Georgia. Amell will play one of two brothers Jack Spade and is cast as the heel in the promotion. Within the world of pro wrestling, “heel” is a term used to describe the bad guy. Additionally, the series will also feature feel-good stories of brotherhood and professionalism in a smalltown in Georgia. Mike O’Malley (The Good Place) will serve as the series showrunner with Julie Yorn (Hell or High Water) and Peter Segal (My Spy) on-board to produce.
Since leaving WWE, CM Punk has had quite an impressive career with a variety of projects on the books. In the last 7 years, CM Punk launched a brief mixed martial arts career in the UFC and co-wrote Marvel Comics’ Drax series. The multitalented Punk expanded his relationship with Marvel with Thor Annual No. 1 and a one-shot of Marvel’s Master of Kung Fu. Additionally, CM Punk has starred in various films including Girl on the Third Floor and Rabid.
