Amell and Ludwig will play two brothers in the series. According to the synopsis, Ludwig will play Ace Spade, the beloved hero (known as the “face” in wrestling jargon) in an independent wrestling promotion. Ace Spade’s character is described in the synopsis as “brash, cocky and self-destructive.” However, Amell will play Jack Spade, the villain and nemesis (“heel”) to Ace.
The two will struggle over their late father’s legacy as well as keeping their characters separate from real life.
Heels will follow in the footsteps of several films and TV shows set in the world of producing professional wrestling. For example, Fighting with a Family depicts the rise of WWE Superstar Paige. Netflix’s GLOW tells the story of the creation and subsequent drama of a wrestling TV show. Pro wrestling is also a driving force behind the plot of Shia LaBeouf’s Peanut Butter Falcon.
