Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, & Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Confirmed To Star In George Miller’s ‘Furiosa’

After months and months of speculation, rumors, and fan casting, it appears the cast of George Miller’s Mad Max spinoff is finally confirmed. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will lead the film’s cast in starring roles.
Throughout the year, all three names have appeared in a bevy of rumors and casting grids as the ideal choices. However, per the initial report, the three powerhouses have officially signed the dotted line to tell a new story set in the Mad Max universe. Anya Taylor-Joy will star in the film as Furiosa in what is described as the character’s true genesis. However, details on Hemsworth and Abdul-Mateen II’s characters remain scarce at this time.
After the critical and commercial success of Mad Max: Fury Road, filmmaker George Miller expressed his desire to develop two more films in the franchise. While one film will reportedly serve as a sequel to Tom Hardy’s Fury Road, Miller began to develop a spinoff starring Charlize Theron’s Furiosa as well. However, the decision was reportedly made to focus on a younger version of Furiosa with Warner Bros electing to recast the role.

Mad Max: Fury Road is a 2015 post-apocalyptic action film by George Miller. The film serves as the fourth installment and reboot for the original Mad Max series featuring Mel Gibson. The film starred Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron and won six Academy Awards at the 2016 ceremony. Miller will return to co-write and direct the spinoff when production begins next year. Additionally, Miller’s longtime partner Doug Mitchell is on-board to produce as well.
The exciting role is yet another feather in the cap for the versatile Anya Taylor-Joy. In 2020, the young actress bolstered her résumé with roles in films like The New Mutants and Emma. Up next, she will star in Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho and Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit. Meanwhile, Chris Hemsworth is gearing up to film his fourth solo Thor film after last starring in Extraction on Netflix. Moreover, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is beginning to create an incredible path forward in his career. Following scene-stealing turns in Aquaman and HBO’s Watchmen, the actor will next appear in Candyman, Matrix 4, and The Trial of the Chicago 7.
