Henry Cavill Says He Hopes To Play Superman For Years to Come

DC movie fans have been receiving a slew of great news over the last few months. Starting with the constant leaks and casting news stemming from Matt Reeves’ The Batman, the 2020 news cycle led to the reveal of the Snyder Cut’s confirmation and beyond. However, one tidbit of news that might have gone largely unnoticed was rumors of Henry Cavill’s return as Superman. During a recent conversation with Sir Patrick Stewart for Variety, Cavill expressed his desire to embody the Man of Steel for as long as he can.
“I’ve always been a fan of Superman,” Cavill shared. “With a character like that, you carry the mantle with you off set. And it becomes part of your public representation. When you meet children, children don’t necessarily see me as Henry Cavill, but they might see Superman, and there’s a responsibility which comes with that. Because it’s such a wonderful character, it’s actually a responsibility I’m happy to have, and I hope that I get to play more of Superman in years to come.”
Cavill was present when director Zack Snyder unveiled the Snyder Cut news. Additionally, the actor has been very open about his love for the role over the years. However, the character’s last appearance took place in 2017’s Justice League. Granted, Superman did cameo during the events of Shazam! in 2019. However, with his head hiding just out of frame, many fans felt robbed of what could have been.

One of the most clamored for projects within the DCEU is a sequel to 2013’s Man of Steel. Unfortunately, that dream remains unfulfilled for the time being. However, given Cavill’s eagerness to return, getting involved in upcoming films like Aquaman 2 or Black Adam could provide unique opportunities. Coincidentally, Cavill is represented by Dany Garcia, the longtime business partner of Dwayne Johnson. Could The Rock’s constant comparisons between his Black Adam and Superman on social media come into play down the line? Perhaps, Cavill could join the likes of Cyborg and Michael Keaton’s Bruce Wayne in The Flash, in theaters July 2022.
Of course, Cavill is interested in continuing to don the red cape. The role is iconic and the potential for its continuance on the big screen will always be explored. Let the speculation begin as to where Cavill pops up next. With DC’s Fandome set for August, more news is virtually guaranteed to arrive sooner than later. Up next, the Superman character will be the focus of his own CW series titled Superman & Lois. Tyler Hoechlin will reprise his Arrowverse role with Elizabeth Tulloch in the role of Lois Lane.
What do you think? Do you hope to see Cavill as Superman for the foreseeable future? Sound off in the comments below!
