Michael Shannon, Emilia Clarke, & Dane DeHaan To Star In Joseph McCarthy Biopic

Joseph McCarthy is one of the most controversial American politicians in history. Beginning in 1950, McCarthy became the most visible public face of a period in the United States in which Cold War tensions fueled fears of widespread Communist subversion. Now, the life of McCarthy will be given the biopic treatment and, as first reported by Deadline, Michael Shannon, Emilia Clarke, and Dane DeHaan will star in the film.
Additionally, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice star Scoot McNairy will round out the ensemble cast as well. Václav Marhoul (The Painted Bird) is directing the biopic with Tom O’Connor (The Hitman’s Bodyguard) penning the script. Rick McCallum (Revenge of the Sith) is on board as executive producer with HanWay Films and CAA Media Finance handling distribution sales at the upcoming American Film Market.

Per the initial report, Michael Shannon will portray McCarthy in the biographical drama. Moreover, Emilia Clarke will play McCarthy’s wife Jean Kerr with Dane DeHaan portraying his lawyer Roy Cohn. The film will take a deeper look at the man behind McCarthyism and reveal the former U.S. Marine’s motivations for his fear-mongering and populism.
Michael Shannon is one of the most accomplished actors of the modern era. He has been nominated twice for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his roles in Revolutionary Road and Nocturnal Animals. After last appearing in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, Shannon will next appear alongside Kate Hudson and Zach Braff in Shriver. Since her breakthrough role as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, Clarke has expanded her career with roles in Solo: A Star Wars Story and the romantic comedy Last Christmas. Up next, Clarke will appear in the star-studded ensemble cast of Marvel’s Secret Invasion series. Meanwhile, Dane DeHaan’s career includes memorable tunes in films like Chronicle, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Recently, the actor appeared in the Apple TV+ miniseries Lisey’s Story.
