One of the greatest performers of all time, Whitney Houston, is the next artist to receive the biopic treatment. Last December, it was revealed that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker star Naomi Ackie had been tapped to portray the legendary singer in the film. Now, as first reported by Deadline, Stanley Tucci is joining the cast as well in the role of Grammy-winning producer Clive Davis.
Clive Davis is a wildly successful record producer, A&R executive, music industry executive, and lawyer. Winning five Grammys, Davis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a non-performer, in 2000. Additionally, Over the course of his career, Davis brings the likes of Whitney Houston and Barry Manilow to prominence along with signing acts like Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel. Currently, Davis serves as the chief creative officer of Sony Music Entertainment.
The film’s title, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, stems from Houston’s 1987 single that won the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 30th Grammy Awards. Per the initial report, Stella Meghie will helm the upcoming biopic. Notably, the Canadian filmmaker recently received critical acclaim for her latest film The Photograph starring Issa Rae and Lakeith Stanfield. Moreover, the film’s screenplay hails from Bohemian Rhapsody scribe Anthony McCarten. Sony Pictures will release the film on December 23, 2022.
Stanley Tucci recently turned in a critically acclaimed performance in the 2021 film Supernova. Furthermore, the Hunger Games star currently voices the sassy Bitsy Brandenham in Apple TV’s Central Park. Up next, Tucci will star in The King’s Man alongside Ralph Fiennes and Djimon Hounsou. Additionally, Tucci will appear alongside David Tennant in Netflix’s Inside Man.
