Following the summer of a lifetime, 16-time WWE Champion John Cena continues to fill his schedule with new and exciting projects. As first reported by Deadline, Cena is joining an all-star ensemble in a new political thriller titled The Independent.
Joining Cena in the cast is Oscar winner Kathy Bates, Queen & Slim star Jodie Turner-Smith, and Succession‘s Brian Cox. Amy Rice (By The People: The Election Of Barack Obama) will direct the feature with a script by screenwriter Evan Parter. Ryan Cunningham (Broad City) will executive produce the film alongside Brian O’Shea and Nat McCormick of The Exchange. Moreover, The Exchange will handle financing and sales with production slated to begin in New York City this November.
Per the initial report, The Independent takes place in the final weeks of one of the most consequential presidential elections in American history. The story follows an ambitious journalist, portrayed by Turner-Smith, as she works alongside her hero, portrayed by Cox, as they uncover a conspiracy that may unravel democracy itself. Cena and Bates will be playing Presidential candidates racing against each other.
Following a groundbreaking performance alongside Daniel Kaluuya in Queen & Slim, Jodie Turner-Smith recently appeared alongside Michael B. Jordan in the adaptation of Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse. Up next, she leads the cast for Netflix’s upcoming The Witcher prequel series The Witcher: Blood Origin. Meanwhile, John Cena steals scenes in recent summer blockbusters F9 and The Suicide Squad. Cena will next star in James Gunn’s HBO Max DC series Peacemaker. Finally, Kathy Bates is one of the most celebrated actors of all time. The cinematic icon can next be seen on the big screen opposite Rachel McAdams in Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.
