John Boyega Joins Viola Davis In Gina Prince-Bythewood’s ‘The Woman King’

After wrapping up a star-making performance in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, all eyes are on John Boyega as he continues to build on his legacy. As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, John Boyega will next join Oscar winner Viola Davis in The Old Guard director Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King.
Boyega also joins Emmy nominee Thuso Mbedu and Captain Marvel star Lashana Lynch in the cast. The film takes inspiration from true events set in The African Kingdom of Dahomey. The kingdom was one of the most powerful dynasties in Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. The legendary Viola Davis will star as Nanisca, the general of an all-female army. The plot follows Nanisca and her daughter Nawi as they battle France and other tribes threatening to destroy their lives. Boyega is playing King Ghezo in the feature.
Gina Prince-Bythewood will direct the feature, based on an original screenplay by Dana Stevens (Fatherhood). Additionally, Prince-Bythewood helped pen the current draft of the screenplay alongside Stevens. Academy Award-winning producer Cathy Schulman is on board to executive produce the film with TriStar Pictures handling financing and distribution. In a statement, the Prince-Bythewood shares her excitement for Boyega joining the film.

“I have been enamored by John’s immense talent for years, but his speech to Black women during the protests cemented my desire to work with him,” said Prince-Bythewood. “The description of King Ghezo reads, ‘He walks as if the earth were honored by its burden.’ John possesses that innate depth and swagger, and I’m so excited to put it on screen.”
John Boyega is one of the most celebrated actors in Hollywood right now with millions calling for him to be the next big thing on Twitter. Boyega will next star alongside Olivia Cooke in Naked Singularity. Additionally, the Star Wars actor will team with Netflix for another project alongside Jamie Foxx and Teyonah Parris titled They Cloned Tyrone. Moreover, the in-demand actor will also star alongside fellow Star Wars alum Felicity Jones in the Guard Brothers’ Borderland. Finally, His slate of upcoming projects also includes co-starring in Gerard McMurray’s The Formula.
