Lashana Lynch is quickly becoming one of the most booked and busy performers in modern Hollywood. With a memorable turn in Marvel’s Captain Marvel, the actress has springboarded into a bevy of exciting roles. As first reported by Deadline, Lynch is set to join Viola Davis in an upcoming film directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood titled The Woman King.
Lynch will also join Emmy nominee Thuso Mbedu in the cast. The film takes inspiration from true events set in The African Kingdom of Dahomey. The kingdom was one of the most powerful dynasties in Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. The legendary Viola Davis will star as Nanisca, the general of an all-female army. The plot follows Nanisca and her daughter Nawi as they battle France and other tribes threatening to destroy their way of life.
Gina Prince-Bythewood will direct the feature, based on an original screenplay by Dana Stevens (Fatherhood). Additionally, Prince-Bythewood helped pen the current draft of the screenplay alongside Stevens. Academy Award-winning producer Cathy Schulman is on board to executive produce the film with TriStar Pictures handling financing and distribution. In a statement, the Prince-Bythewood shares her excitement for Lynch joining the series.
“Lashana is next-level dope — not just her incredible chops, but who she projects to the world,” said Prince-Bythewood. “She embodies these true-life warriors, and we are so lucky she is coming to play.”
Lashana Lynch portrays Maria Rambeau in 2019’s Captain Marvel, a role made even more vital to the MCU thanks to the events of WandaVision. Up next for Lynch is a starring role alongside Daniel Craig, Ana De Armas, and Rami Malek in No Time To Die. Moreover, the versatile performer is set to star as Miss Honey in Netflix’s highly anticipated musical remake of the 1996 cult-classic family film Matilda.
