‘Captain Marvel 2’ Casts ‘Velvet Buzzsaw’s Zawe Ashton As Its Villain

Carol Danvers’ second solo outing has found its villain. Velvet Buzzsaw actress Zawe Ashton is joining the cast of Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel 2 in an undisclosed role, sources tell Deadline.
Ashton is best known for starring alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in Netflix’s satirical horror thriller Velvet Buzzsaw. Her other credits include Doctor Who, Neil Jordan’s Greta and the British comedy Fresh Meat. Later this year, Ashton will appear in Season 4 of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale.
After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Carol Danvers will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain Marvel 2, helmed by Candyman director Nia DaCosta. She won’t be alone, however, as Iman Vellani and Teyonah Parris have joined the cast as Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau, respectively.

When asked about her new director, Larson had nothing but admiration. “It’s amazing, and I’m so excited that it’s announced and I can talk about it. Nia is amazing and she got the job because she is the best person for the job,” she said. “That’s one of my favorite parts about this. She just gave an incredible presentation and I’m inspired by her. She has confidence and it’s a big deal to step into like, this thing, the Marvel universe, this huge thing! And to have a leader who’s just like,’Yeah, I’m meant to be here.’”
