With the Toronto International Film Festival getting underway this week, a litany of news stories is bound to come from the big event. One hot package heading to TIFF features a star-studded cast and a rather unique premise, according to Deadline.
The film, titled Sniff, will star cinematic legends Morgan Freeman, Al Pacino, Helen Mirren, and Danny DeVito. Oscar-winner Taylor Hackford will direct that film that will reportedly be a reinvention of the film noir genre. Tom Grey (Player Piano) penned the screenplay for Sniff and will serve as an executive producer. Additionally, Endeavor Content will launch worldwide sales at TIFF with Adam Goodman (Songbird) and Matt Skiena (The Lego Movie) producing as well.
Per the initial report, the events of the film follow the mysterious deaths of two luxury retirement home residents. When detective Joe Mulwray, portrayed by Freeman, is pulled into the case by his partner William Keys, portrayed by DeVito, the duo uncover a hidden underworld of crime in the community. Moreover, they unravel the less-than-savory plot put into motion by kingpin Harvey Stride, portrayed by Al Pacino, and his femme fatale right-hand woman The Spider, portrayed by Mirren. In a statement, Hackford explains the thought process behind casting all the A-list performers.
“When you have something that’s original, I asked him, who did you have in mind when you wrote it? He said Morgan Freeman as the detective at the end of his rope, the main nemesis Al Pacino, the femme fatale Helen Mirren, an actor I know quite well,” said Hackford. “I said, how about the ex-partner? He said Danny DeVito. Well, these are all people I know. I’ve worked with Al, Helen, Danny is a friend, and Morgan I know, and he’s always been looking for something to do with Helen. I said, I’m going to try and make your dream come true. Luckily, what I’d read on the page fit those actors.”
