Tom Hiddleston To Star In ‘The Essex Serpent’ Series Adaptation For Apple TV+

Last summer, it was reported that Pirates of the Caribbean star Keira Knightley was on-board to star in and produce a new series for Apple TV+ titled The Essex Serpent. Unfortunately, Knightley later dropped out of the project with Golden Globe winner Claire Danes stepping in as her replacement. Now, as first revealed to Deadline, Tom Hiddleston will serve as Danes’ co-star in the upcoming series.
The Essex Serpent is based on the bestselling 2016 novel with the same name by author Sarah Perry and set in the year 1893. The project follows the recently widowed Cora following liberation from an abusive marriage. As she relocates to from the lavish Victorian-era London to a smaller village of Aldwinter in Essex, she grows enamored by a local superstition that claims a mythical creature dubbed the Essex Serpent is returning. The book won the British Book Awards for 2016 Book of the Year and touts over 280,000 copies sold worldwide.

The series hails from See-Saw Films (The King’s Speech) and earned a straight-to-series order from Apple TV.
Tom Hiddleston will next appear as the God of Mischief Loki in the self-titled MCU series heading to Disney+ this June. Hiddleston will also voice the character in the Disney+ animated series What If…?. However, outside of his Marvel role, the actor earned a Golden Globe for his work in The Night Manager. Sticking to his roots as a stage actor, the Kong: Skull Island star recently appeared alongside Daredevil star Charlie Cox in the 2019 Broadway revival of the hit play Betrayal.
