‘Narcos: Mexico’ Star Diego Calva Joins Margot Robbie & Brad Pitt In Damien Chazelle’s ‘Babylon’

Damien Chazelle is the youngest person in history to earn the Academy Award for Best Director. Due to that fact, his next project, titled Babylon, is by-far one of the most anticipated upcoming movies in recent memory. Following the news that Margot Robbie was replacing Emma Stone in the film’s cast, Chazelle continues to fill out the ranks for the ensemble. As first reported by Deadline, newcomer Diego Calva is joining the cast in a pivotal role.

Calva joins the previously announced cast which includes the aforementioned Robbie and cinematic legend Brad Pitt. Additionally, Overlord star Jovan Adepo and Li Jun Li (Quantico) will appear in the film as well. The studio behind the film, Paramount Pictures, is hoping no further developments or delays will offset the movie’s production or Christmas season 2022 release date.

Babylon will be an R-rated period piece set against the backdrop of a dramatic shifting moment in Hollywood history. The film will track the turning point in which major motion pictures transitioned from silent films into “talkies”. Previously, rumors that Meryl Streep, Michael B. Jordan, and Tobey Maguire were being eyed for starring roles in the film hit the internet. However, the aforementioned Maguire will produce the feature alongside Marc Platt (La La Land), Olivia Hamilton (First Man), and Matt Plouffe (The 5th Wave). Damien Chazelle will direct the film after writing the screenplay himself.

The young Diego Calva looks to use the latest role to propel his blossoming career forward. Previously, the Mexico City native appeared in the Netflix series Unstoppable. However, the actor has already completed work on upcoming projects Bonded and the short film Sleeping Dogs Lie. Up next, Calva will appear in a recurring role in the upcoming season of Netflix’s Narcos: Mexico.
