New ‘Constantine’ Series From J.J. Abrams Reportedly In Development At HBO Max

Last year, reports that J.J. Abrams is teaming with Warner Bros to develop a new Justice League Dark series for HBO Max hit the web. The news has fans of the darker events within the pages of DC Comics excited and looking forward to the future of DC movies. And then, a new report that Abrams was developing a Constantine film for Warner Bros as well. However, a new report from The Illuminerdi suggests the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director is now developing a Constantine series for HBO Max.
Per the initial report, Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions company will produce the series. Additionally, author Guy Bolton is reportedly attached to write the series. The series will also apparently focus more on the horror themes often seen in Constantine-centric DC comics. However, unlike previous adaptations of the character, the HBO Max project will star a BIPOC actor with casting directors looking for a Riz Ahmed-like performer.

Debuting in the pages of DC Comics in The Saga of Swamp Thing #37 in 1985, John Constantine is certainly a force to be reckoned with. The character made his first live appearance in the 2005 film Constantine with Keanu Reeves and then again in the television series Constantine with Matt Ryan. Ryan returned to portray his role in the Arrowverse show Arrow in the fourth season, until joining the cast of the television series Legends of Tomorrow starting in the third season.
The new series will likely be a part of Abrams’ new overall content deal with Warner Bros. His company will seemingly look to play a big part in the success surrounding HBO Max and the DCEU. However, It is unclear at this time if this series will connect with Abrams’ aforementioned Justice League Dark project. The new project follows DC’s recent attempt to connect the DCEU films with shows on HBO Max. The Suicide Squad director James Gunn is directing a Peacemaker series starring John Cena while a TV spinoff of The Batman is in the works at all.
