One of the most prolific historical figures in American history will be the subject of an upcoming biographical drama series. As first reported by Deadline, a limited series about the life and times of Josephine Baker with Loving star Ruth Negga in the starring role is in the works at ABC Signature Studios.
Ruth Negga will portray the American-born French entertainer. Moreover, the actress will serve as executive producer as well. Written by Saving Grace producer Dee Harris-Lawrence and directed by Millicent Shelton (Black-ish), the series, titled Josephine, will also be produced by 4-time NBA Champion Lebron James as well. Per the initial report, the series will be a raw and unflinching story about the unrelenting Josephine Baker.
Born in 1906, Baker went on to become the most successful Black female artist of her time. She was also the first Black woman to star in a major motion picture and renowned as a dancer and Jazz legend. However, the versatile entertainer would also go on to serve as a French Resistance agent during World War II. Later in life, Baker became a heralded figure in the Civil Rights Movement. Refusing to perform for segregated audiences, Baker establishes a relationship with Coretta Scott King following MLK’s assassination. The legend would continue to entertain the masses as one of the world’s biggest stars until her death in 1975.
For her portrayal of Mildred Loving in Loving, Negga was nominated for a host of awards including Best Actress nods at the Golden Globes and the Oscars. Additionally, Negga turned heads as the Inhuman Raina in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Recently, the actress had a main role alongside Dominic Cooper in AMC’s Preacher as well. Up next, Negga will star in Rebecca Hall’s directorial debut Passing opposite Tessa Thompson.
