Born in 1906, Baker went on to become the most successful Black female artist of her time. She was also the first Black woman to star in a major motion picture and renowned as a dancer and Jazz legend. However, the versatile entertainer would also go on to serve as a French Resistance agent during World War II. Later in life, Baker became a heralded figure in the Civil Rights Movement.
