Jack Black Joins Lionsgate’s ‘Borderlands’ Movie As Claptrap

Lionsgate’s latest foray into video game movies has cast a controversial character. According to Variety, Jack Black is reuniting with director Eli Roth to play Claptrap in the upcoming Borderlands film.
After working with Black on 2018’s The House with a Clock in Its Walls, Roth is looking forward to the opportunity to collaborate with the actor again. “I am so excited to reunite with Jack, this time in the recording booth,” Roth explained in a statement. “Claptrap is the funniest character in the game, and Jack is perfect to bring him to the big screen.”
First appearing in Borderland’s debut game in 2009, Claptrap is a CL4P-TP general purpose robot manufactured by Hyperion that has been programmed with an overenthusiastic personality. Upon his debut, the character was met with harsh criticism, with many critics describing him as the game’s most annoying figure.

Back in 2019, Full Circle Cinema broke the news that Lionsgate was developing a female-centric Borderlands project that would feature Lilith as its lead character. Since then, the film has brought on Thor: Ragnarok star Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland and Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis.
