Jim Gaffigan Joins Disney’s ‘Peter Pan & Wendy’ As Mr. Smee

Just a few weeks after reports that Parks & Recreation star Nick Offerman was offered the role, it appears a different actor entirely will portray Mr. Smee in Disney’s Peter Pan & Wendy. As first reported by The Wrap, stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan is boarding the film’s cast to portray Captain Hook’s faithful sidekick.
Gaffigan will join other recent additions to the cast, including Jude Law as Captain Hook and Yara Shahidi as Tinker Bell. Additionally, he will appear on-screen alongside the previously cast Alexander Molony & Ever Anderson, who will play Peter Pan and Wendy, respectively. Gaffigan’s inclusion would offer an interesting take on the character, who first appeared in J. M. Barrie’s 1904 play Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up. As Captain Hook’s loyal first mate, Mr. Smee is often the bain of Hook’s existence while offering the plot some comedic license.

Jim Gaffigan has had several successful comedy specials over the last decade or so. Throughout his career, he also co-created and starred in a TV Land television series based on his life called The Jim Gaffigan Show. Up next, the versatile actor will voice Thunderbolt, a member of the Justice Society of America, in The CW’s Stargirl. Additionally, Gaffigan will lead the cast for the upcoming sci-fi comedy Linoleum.
Disney’s live-action films based on popular animated properties continue to create new and exciting variations of classic tales. On the heels of successful films like Mulan and The Lion King, Disney is hoping for further success with the Peter Pan reimagining. However, Peter Pan & Wendy is not the first attempt at creating a live-action version of the story. The first adaptation was the cult-classic Hook, which starred Robin Willaims and more recently, Hugh Jackman’s Pan. David Lowery, who directed Pete’s Dragon, is currently on board to helm the latest adaptation. Lowery co-wrote the script with Toby Halbrooks (A Ghost Story), with Jim Whitaker (A Wrinkle In Time) producing.
