Black Mask Confirmed To Appear In ‘Batwoman’ Season 2

With production already well underway in Canada, season two of The CW’s Batwoman is one of the most anticipated offerings from the Arrowverse. With leaked peaks at the show’s new star Javicia Leslie as Ryan Wilder, the series is looking to make a splash. As first reported by Entertainment Weekly, an iconic member of Batman’s rogue’s gallery will be joining the series as Black Mask will have a role to play in the events of season two.
Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries reveals that, in addition to the previously announced Safiyah, Ryan Wilder’s superheroine will need to contest with a host of other forces of evil as well.
“We have a couple of big bads this season,” Dries says. “One, who we teed up midway through last season, is this woman Safiyah, and she’s sort of Alice’s Achilles’ Heel. And ultimately yes with the False Face Society, we will see the leader of this gang as Black Mask later on in the season.”

Black Mask debuted in the pages of DC Comics in Batman #386 in 1985. Often depicted as a major crime boss in Gotham, he has a fixation with masks and derives sadistic pleasure from the act of torture. Real name Roman Sionis, the villain dons a terrifying black mask when committing the most heinous of crimes, hence the moniker. Ewan McGregor portrayed the character during 2020’s lone DCEU installment Birds of Prey. Last September, it was reported that Mindhunter‘s Alex Morf is on-board to play supervillain Victor Zsasz, who often appears teaming up with Black Mask.
Additionally, Dries reveals to EW a bit more about Wilder’s motivations and how her war own personal on drugs will be a factor moving forward.
“While Ryan never used drugs, she was in a relationship where somebody was using drugs and it’s ultimately what got Ryan put away in jail. So, it’s this idea that Ryan is this innocent woman and if she were white, per se, she might not have had the same punishment that she, as an innocent Black woman, had to go through. That’s a huge piece of her backstory, so that’s something we’re exploring this year,” says Dries. “Batwoman has this particular vendetta against the False Face Society because the idea of drugs permeating the city and nobody taking any responsibility for it strikes at her core.”
