Rhys Darby To Star In Taika Waititi’s Comedy Series ‘Our Flag Means Death’ For HBO Max

Throughout his 25 year career as an active performer, Rhys Darby has quietly built quite an impressive filmography. With starring roles in films like Yes Man and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle alongside megastars like Jim Carrey and Dwayne Johnson, the New Zealand actor touts several memorable movie moments. Up next, as first reported by Deadline, Darby is on-board to lead the cast of an upcoming comedy series in the works at HBO Max.
The series, titled Our Flag Means Death, hails from Acamedy Award-winning filmmaker, Taika Waititi. The plot loosely based on the life and times of Stede Bonnet. Known as “The Gentleman Pirate”, Bonnet was a moderately wealthy English farmer born on the island of Barbados. After a midlife crisis, he turns to a life of crime in the early 18th century. From then, he purchases a ship, names it “Revenge”, and sails the Eastern Seaboard of what is now the United States with a crew and gained fame for burning other Barbadian ships.

Additionally, Jenkins will also serve as showrunner for the series.
Following the overwhelming success of Thor: Ragnarok, Waititi is one of the most sought after filmmakers in the world. Up next, the writer/director will helm Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder, starring Chris Hemsworth. Additionally, the Jojo Rabbit director is actively developing a film set in the Star Wars universe. The multitalented performer will also appear on-screen in Free Guy and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Last seen on the big screen in Jumanji: The Next Level, Rhys Darby will also star in Waititi’s Next Goal Wins, which is currently in production.
