Following the biggest win of his career for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 92nd Academy Awards for Jojo Rabbit, Taika Waititi is one of the busiest men in Hollywood. As first reported by The Wrap, the transcendent filmmaker is tapped to develop two animated series based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for Netflix. One of which will focus on Willy Wonka’s Oompa Loompas.
In a statement that accompanied the initial report, Netflix Vice President of Original Animation Melissa Cobb expressed her excitement for the upcoming partnership.
“I grew up reading Dahl stories and lived large parts of my young life in those magical worlds, so finding just the right creative partner to bring Willy Wonka, Charlie and the Oompa Loompas to life in animation was a daunting task…until Taika walked into the room. Then, it was really obvious. If Dahl had created a character of a filmmaker to adapt his work, he would have created Taika.”
In addition to this new project, Waititi is rumored to helm an upcoming Star Wars film for LucasFilm. Additionally, he will tackle the upcoming Marvel film Thor: Love and Thunder, starring Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman. Moreover, the director will appear in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and Free Guy, starring Ryan Reynolds.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl published in 1964. The book has been adapted into two major motion pictures: Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory in 1971, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 2005. The story remains one of the most well-known and celebrated in history.
