Taika Waititi recently ventured into the Star Wars universe with a voice role and directing gig on Disney+’s The Mandalorian. However, as first reported by THR, the Thor: Ragnarok director is in talks with Lucasfilm to direct a feature-length Star Wars film.
The initial report does not indicate just where those talks will lead at this point. Although, Disney has moved forward with an approach to allow the eccentric filmmaker to helm his own story set in a galaxy far, far away.
Previously, Waititi appeared as IG-11 in The Mandalorian. The bounty hunter-turned-nurse droid delivers one of the first season’s more emotional moments during its finale. Additionally, Waititi directed the season one finale and, in doing so, got a taste of what creating Star Wars was all about.
The director stepped into the world of big box office blockbusters with 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. The third film of the trilogy is easily the most favored amongst critics and fans alike. However, the filmmaker is in the midst of receiving the ultimate honor in the form of a few Academy Awards. His 2019 film Jojo Rabbit is nominated for 6 Oscars, including Best Picture, at the upcoming 2020 ceremony.
The future of Star Wars remains a mystery. The Rise of Skywalker is the end of the Skywalker Saga. This means any future installments in the franchise will cover new territory. The idea of creating something new within the legendary Star Wars films will be enticing for a bevy of filmmakers.
