Alfred Molina To Return As Doctor Octopus In ‘Spider-Man 3’

With production for the highly anticipated third installment in the Marvel Studios/Sony Pictures Spider-Man franchise beginning, it appears all hands are on deck. With news that Benedict Cumberbatch would appear as Doctor Strange in the film, fans immediately began to speculate whether or not the Tom Holland-starring movie would venture through the multiverse. Now, as first reported by GeeksWorldwide and confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, Spider-Man 2 star Alfred Molina joins the film in a reprisal of his Doctor Octopus role.
Molina joins fellow previous Spider-Man movie alum Jamie Foxx who will appear in the currently-untitled Spider-Man 3 as Electro. Molina first portrayed the villainous Doc Ock in Sam Raimi‘s 2004 sequel Spider-Man 2. In the years since his portrayal has been universally revered and pushes the film to the top of many moviegoers’ favorite superhero films lists. Additionally, this news will assuredly add fuel to the fire that Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield will return for the film as well.

Debuting in The Amazing Spider-Man #3 (July 1963), Doctor Octopus is one of the most enduring foes of Spider-Man. A highly intelligent and myopic mad scientist, the supervillain utilizes four mechanical appendages for both movement and combat. Recently, the character appeared as the main antagonist in the Spider-Man PlayStation 4 video game.
Spider-Man 3 will see Jon Watts return to the director’s chair. Additionally, Tom Holland will return as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, and Tony Revolori are also expected to return in their respective roles. It is also safe to assume Marisa Tomei and Jon Favreau will reprise their MCU roles as well.
Alfred Molina’s career has spanned over four decades with numerous award-winning roles in films and on the West End stage. Additionally, the actor touts a laundry list of television roles as well. Recently, the actor voiced King Agnarr in Disney’s Frozen 2 and starred in Edward James Olmos’ The Devil Has a Name. Moreover, the Tony nominee will appear alongside Alison Brie and Bo Burnham in Promising Young Woman.
