Zendaya To Star In A24’s Ronnie Spector Biopic

Fresh off a huge win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series at the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards, Zendaya continues to bolster her already impressive résumé. With the second season of Euphoria likely beginning production early next year, the performer’s schedule will next expand with a new starring role. As first reported by Deadline, Zendaya will star as the legendary R&B singer Ronnie Spector in a new musical biopic.
Per the initial report, A24 will produce the feature following the acquisition of the rights to Be My Baby, the memoir Spector wrote with playwright Vince Waldron. The studio that produced recent hits like Uncut Gems and Midsommar is reportedly courting Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury to pen the screenplay. Additionally, Spector will serve as the film’s executive producer along with her husband Jonathan Greenfield. Marc Platt (La La Land) and Adam Siegel (Hotel Artemis) are on-board to produce as well.

Ronnie Spector originally fronted the Ronettes with her older sister Estelle Bennett and their cousin Nedra Talley. The group rose to prominence in the mid–1960s with hits like “Be My Baby” and “Baby, I Love You”. However, Spector broke out as a solo artist with five studio albums over the last three decades. Spector is commonly referred to as the original “bad girl of rock and roll”. Furthermore. in 2007, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Ronettes.
Following a groundbreaking role in HBO’s Euphoria, Zendaya continues to carve out a great legacy all her own. In addition to her role as MJ in Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man films, the talented performer will next appear on the big screen in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune. Moreover, the multitalented star of The Greatest Showman will appear alongside Tenet‘s John David Washington in Sam Levinson’s Malcolm & Marie.
