Zendaya & John David Washington Star In Sam Levinson’s Upcoming Film ‘Malcolm & Marie’

Despite worldwide restrictions put in place for a bevy of film and TV productions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it appears a new, exciting feature has secretly been filming on the west coast. According to a new report from Deadline, a new romance drama titled Malcolm & Marie from Euphoria creator Sam Levinson shot between June 17-July 2 at the Caterpillar House in Carmel, California.

While details on the film’s plot remain scarce, the new project stars two of the biggest young stars in Hollywood, Zendaya and John David Washington. Per the initial report, the film is similar in tone to Netflix’s Academy Award-winning picture Marriage Story. Moreover, the film will include plot points that touch on coronavirus complications as well as the surge in support for the Black Lives Matter movement. The singer/actress shared a first look at the film on Twitter.

Following the shut down of HBO’s Euphoria, Zendaya reportedly began to develop a new film alongside Levinson. Ultimately, the filmmaker wrote and directed what became Malcolm & Marie. Furthermore, Levinson’s production partner Ashley Levinson (Bombshell) helped produce and finance the feature with Kevin Turen (That Awkward Moment). Zendaya and Washington assisted with the production’s finances as well. Additionally, hip hop artist Kid Cudi is on-board as an executive producer as well.

The most interesting tidbit of this story is the extremely intricate precautions taken leading to the film’s completion. Cast and crew met with doctors, lawyers, WGA, DGA, and SAG to meet the requirements necessary to go into production. The entire team practiced social distancing, wore masks, and quarantined while cameras were not rolling. At this time, the film holds no release date.

Following a groundbreaking role in HBO’s Euphoria, Zendaya continues to carve out an incredibly impressive filmography. In addition to her role as MJ in Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man films, the talented performer will appear on the big screen in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune. On the other hand, Washington will star in Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated thriller Tenet alongside Robert Pattinson.
