New ‘Pink Panther’ Movie In Development At MGM With ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ Director

Believe it or not, Sonic the Hedgehog remains one of the highest-grossing films of 2020. Because its release took place just before the COVID-19 shutdowns, the film enjoyed a successful run in theaters. Up next, as first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Sonic director Jeff Fowler will team with MGM Studios to develop a new focusing on The Pink Panther.
The Pink Panther franchise began with the release of the classic film in 1963. Regardless of the medium, the franchise usually follows an inept French police detective named Inspector Jacques Clouseau. The series of mystery-comedies derives its name from the eponymous pink diamond. When viewed closely, the diamond’s center resembles a leaping pink panther. The iconic animated character appears in the opening and closing credits of almost every film in The Pink Panther series. Additionally, the character appears in a bevy of spinoff comics, animated shows, and video games. Most recently, 2006’s The Pink Panther, starring Steve Martin as Clouseau, was directed by Shawn Levy (Free Guy) and its cast included Beyoncé Knowles.

The latest attempt to rejuvenate the franchise will see Clouseau working alongside an imaginary friend, who will be a CGI Pink Panther. The film hails from the aforementioned Jeff Fowler and Bad Boys for Life scribe Chris Bremner. Moreover, Walter Mirisch (In the Heat of the Night) will executive produce the film alongside Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich (Aladdin). Notably, cinematic icon Julie Andrews is on-board to produce the film as well.
In a statement, MGM Film Group executives Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy express excitement to reboot the series.
“Popular the world over, the legacy of the iconic Pink Panther has endured for more than 50 years and continues to be discovered by new generations,” they said. “We are so happy to come together with Jeff, Chris, Julie, Dan, Jonathan, Walter, and Ryan to bring one of MGM‘s most well-loved franchise back to the big screen and in a way audience has never seen before.”
