‘Smallville’ Star Michael Rosenbaum Turned Down Role In James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’

Last December, The CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths event brought the worlds of DC’s various TV shows together. One of the most exciting inclusions was the return of Smallville‘s Tom Welling in the role of Clark Kent. Additionally, it was revealed that Smallville‘s Lex Luthor Michael Rosenbaum was approached to appear as well. However, that did not come to fruition. During a conversation with ComicBook.com, the actor revealed that he was also approached for a role in James Gunn’s upcoming DC film The Suicide Squad.
Unfortunately, Rosenbaum also revealed that he was unable to film this role due to a neck surgery he underwent close to the filming schedule.
“It was close, I was supposed,” Rosenbaum said. “Let’s just say I supposed to be in it, but I had neck surgery and I couldn’t do a role. I couldn’t do the roll because it was too physical at that time, and I couldn’t jeopardize my neck, but there was, there was the role.” Unfortunately, for now, this role is going to remain a secret. Perhaps this could be a good sign of him playing it somewhere down the road? I won’t say the role, but there was the role. James is always so gracious and kind and reached out and so I think when the time’s right, look it’s nice when your friends think of you, it’s nice when your friends have a part.”

Rosenbaum is no stranger to working with James Gunn. The actor actually appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 as Martinex T’Naga. The Suicide Squad will reportedly be a soft reboot of the franchise. While it will feature characters from 2016’s David Ayer-led Suicide Squad, many fans except a completely different tone. Gunn recruited a litany of A-list talent for the film and spent many months filming scenes in Central America. Additionally, set footage and photos have provided fans with small glimpses of what to look forward to. Among them are Harley Quinn’s new look, John Cena as a bad guy, and Idris Elba taking the lead.
Despite the current state of the world, this remains a rather exciting time for DC movie fans. Following the reveal of Robert Pattinson’s Batman from director Matt Reeves, fans are looking forward to what the future of the DCEU will hold. Following the completion of The Suicide Squad, Gunn will next tackle Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
