‘Supernatural’ Star Jensen Ackles To Play Soldier Boy In Season 3 Of ‘The Boys’
Following 15 seasons of the fan-favorite CW series Supernatural, Jensen Ackles has secured his next big starring role. As first revealed by the actor himself on Instagram, Ackles is joining the cast of The Boys in its third season as Soldier Boy.
The news follows found audition tapes that confirm Soldier Boy will appear in the series. Moreover, the addition also means Ackles will reunite with his Supernatural showrunner Eric Kripke. In a statement to Variety, Kripke expressed his excitement to work with Jensen Ackles on the Amazon series.
“When I was a child, I had a crazy, impossible dream: to provide Jensen Ackles with gainful employment,” said Kripke. “I’m happy to say that dream has come true. Jensen is an amazing actor, an even better person, smells like warm chocolate chip cookies, and I consider him a brother. As Soldier Boy, the very first superhero, he’ll bring so much humor, pathos, and danger to the role. I can’t wait to be on set with him again, and bring a bit of Supernatural to The Boys.”
Created by Garth Ennis and John McCrea, Soldier Boy first appeared in 2009’s The Boys: Herogasm #1. A parody of Captain America, Soldier Boy, is easy to frighten and weak-willed. However, while this version of the character was focused on joining the Seven, it was revealed that Mallory killed the original Soldier Boy during World War II.
Season two of The Boys will premiere on Amazon Prime next month. The addition of Ackles follows the announcement that X-Men star Shawn Ashmore will join the show as Lamplighter as well. Additionally, the series continues to push the envelope and provide quality superhero antics set in a mature world that touts a large following clamoring for more.
Ackles is no stranger to the superhero genre. The actor serves as the voice of Jason Todd AKA Red Hood in the animated feature Batman: Under the Red Hood. Additionally, the actor’s filmography includes roles in a bevy of popular TV series like Days of Our Lives, Smallville, and Dawson’s Creek. The actor also had the opportunity to flex his directing muscles for a few episodes of Supernatural as well.
