Over the last few years, actors like Taron Egerton and Rami Malek have received universal praise for their portrayal of iconic musicians Elton John and Freddie Mercury. Now, a young up-and-coming actress hopes to join their ranks. As first reported by Variety, Marisa Abela is now the frontrunner to play the legendary singer Amy Winehouse in the artist’s upcoming biopic.
Per the initial report, sources believe Abela is already in negotiations for the role. The film will be titled Back to Black, after Winehouse’s Grammy Award-winning 2006 album. Fifty Shades of Grey director Sam Taylor-Johnson will helm the film, which has the full support and cooperation of Amy Winehouse’s estate. BAFTA Award nominee Matt Greenhalgh is penning the script with Studiocanal handling production and financing. Alison Owen (Your Voice In My Head), Debra Hayward (Bridget Jones’s Baby), and Tracey Seaward (Philomena) are on board to executive produce the film. Casting for the role of Winehouse is said to already be well underway.
Winehouse’s debut album, Frank, was released in 2003 and received critical success in the UK, and was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Winehouse released her follow-up album, Back to Black, in 2006, which went on to become an international success and one of the best-selling albums in UK history. At the 50th Grammy Awards in 2008, she won five awards. By doing so, she tied the record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night. She is also the first British woman to win five Grammys. Unfortunately, Winehouse passed away at the age of 27 in 2011.
Meanwhile, Maris Abela currently stars in the HBO series Industry. Additionally, the British actor also touts a memorable role in the Sky One series COBRA. Up next, Abela will star alongside the likes of Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and Simu Liu in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.
