With box office-breaking, thought-provoking hits under his belt like Inception and Tenet, Christopher Nolan continues to add to his legacy on the big screen. Up next, the filmmaker will produce a film based on the life of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. As first reported by Deadline, Nolan has recruited Matt Damon and Robert Downey Jr. for the evergrowing ensemble.
Damon and Downy will join the previously cast Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt. Nolan will write and direct the film, titled Oppenheimer. Universal Pictures will produce and distribute the feature alongside Nolan’s Syncopy production banner. Additionally, Nolan’s longtime collaborator Emma Thomas (Dunkirk) will executive produce the film along with Charles Roven (Zack Snyder’s Justice League).

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, Oppenheimer will serve as a biopic for the father of the atomic bomb. Oppenheimer was an American theoretical physicist. History remembers him for his role in the Manhattan Project, the World War II undertaking that developed the first nuclear weapons. In August 1945, the weapons were used in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Moreover, he later famously remarked, “now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”
Robert Downey Jr. is a pop culture icon for starring as Tony Stark in ten films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with Iron Man and ending in Avengers: Endgame. Since then, the multihyphenate has starred in Dolittle and executive produced Netflix’s DC series, Sweet Tooth. Meanwhile, Matt Damon recently appeared alongside Adam Driver and Ben Affleck in The Last Duel. Up next, the Oscar winner will reportedly make a cameo in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder.
Oppenheimer hits theaters on July 21, 2023.
