Taika Waititi Will Reportedly Direct Disney’s ‘Tower of Terror’

With the recent box office success of Disney’s Jungle Cruise, Disney will continue turning key Disney World attractions into big-budget flicks. A few months ago, it was reported that Black Widow‘s Scarlett Johansson is starring in a Tower of Terror movie. Now, our friends over at The DisInsider are reporting that Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi has signed on to helm Disney’s Tower of Terror.
Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley will write the film’s script. Johansson will also produce the project alongside Jonathan Lia (Runaway) via her These Pictures production banner. Additionally, it is not clear at this time if Waititi will appear in the film as well, as he has done for other films he’s helmed.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, also simply known as Tower of Terror, is an accelerated drop tower ride located at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Tokyo DisneySea, and Walt Disney Studios Park. Inspired by Rod Serling’s anthology television series, The Twilight Zone, it places riders in a seemingly ordinary hotel elevator. However, fictional backstories in which people have mysteriously disappeared from the elevator due to a supernatural influence are presented. The original version of the attraction opened in July 1994. A made-for-television Tower of Terror movie starring Kirsten Dunst aired on ABC back in 1997.
The new series adds to Waititi’s already heavy load of upcoming projects. The Free Guy star recently wrapped filming on Thor: Love and Thunder and will next write and direct an installment in the Star Wars franchise. Additionally, the Oscar winner is developing a new series, titled Our Flag Means Death, for HBO Max. Fans of Waititi are also anxiously awaiting the impending release of the filmmaker’s Michael Fassbender-starring film Next Goal Wins.
