Jake Gyllenhaal & Sam Hargrave Teaming For Adaptation Of Rob Liefeld’s ‘Prophet’

Best known for co-creating well-known Marvel characters like Cable and Deadpool, Rob Liefeld’s career is one of the most prolific in the American comic book canon. Up next, his period piece, Prophet, will get the big-screen adaptation treatment. As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Jake Gyllenhaal will star in the film with Extraction director Sam Hargrave at the helm.
Prophet is a superhero who appears in books published by Image Comics. The character stars in three ongoing series, debuting in 1993, 1995, and 2012, respectively. It follows John Prophet, a homeless man living in the World War II era. Prophet volunteers to participate in the medical experiments of Dr. Horatio Wells, a time-traveling scientist from the future. Dr. Wells uses DNA-enhancing methods to transform Prophet into a supersoldier. Per the initial report, the film will see Prophet volunteer for a German experiment in order to feed his family. After a bombing buries him alive and traps him underground for 20 years, Prophet awakes in 1965 to a whole new world.

Jake Gyllenhaal will star in the film as the titular hero. Additionally, Hargrave will direct the feature with a script penned by Marc Guggenheim (Arrow). Studio 8 is bankrolling the picture John Graham (Everybody Loves Raymond) and Adrian Askarieh (Hitman) serving as executive producers alongside Rob Liefeld. Moreover, in a statement, Studio 8 CEO Jeff Robinov expresses his excitement to bring the project to life.
“It’s been a goal of ours to work with Jake and Sam for quite some time. So we’re very excited to finally be collaborating with them on this unique, action-packed genre film,” Robinov says. “I’m looking forward to seeing what they envision for bringing this story to life — a story we’re sure will stand out in the comic book world as a powerful, emotionally charged, and visually distinctive film.”
Gyllenhaal’s extremely busy schedule recently saw him re-team him with director Antoine Fuqua for Netflix’s The Guilty. Up next, the Nightcrawler star is set to appear alongside Oscar Isaac in Barry Levinson’s Francis And The Godfather biopic. Additionally, the multi-talented performer will join Hobbs & Shaw star Vanessa Kirby for a new survival thriller titled Suddenly.
