After months and months of speculation, fans of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter finally know when their favorite wizards are returning to the big screen. As first reported by WB’s Wizarding World website, the latest chapter of the Fantastic Beasts saga will hit theaters on April 15, 2022, a few months earlier than planned. Additionally, the initial report notes that the film could potentially release earlier in some international markets.
The film will officially be titled Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Along with the announcement of a release date, some key plot details were revealed as well.
Professor Albus Dumbledore knows the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald is moving to seize control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Magizoologist Newt Scamander to lead an intrepid team of wizards, witches and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old and new beasts and clash with Grindelwald’s growing legion of followers. But with the stakes so high, how long can Dumbledore remain on the sidelines?
Late last year, it was reported that accomplished thespian Mads Mikkelsen is replacing Johnny Depp in the role of Grindelwald. Moreover, David Yates is back to direct the feature with David Heyman and the problematic J.K. Rowling on board as executive producers. The screenplay hails from Rowling and Steve Kloves (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2).
The Fantastic Beasts film series serves as a spinoff and prequel to the Harry Potter franchise. The first two installments follow British wizard and magizoologist Newt Scamander as he travels worldwide in an attempt to rescue and care for magical creatures. However, embarks on a much bigger journey thanks to his mentor Albus Dumbledore. The films feature an A-list cast including Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Ezra Miller, Colin Farrell, Ron Perlman, Jude Law, and Zoë Kravitz. The series touts a combined $375 million at the worldwide box office, so far.
