Apple Studios continues to add a bevy of interesting projects to its future slate of original content heading for its streaming service. Following the $200 million acquisition of Matthew Vaughn’s star-studded Argylle last week, the studio is in final negotiations to snag another hot package. As first reported by Deadline, Apple will win the auction for the upcoming Sue Mengers biopic starring Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence in the leading role.
Fellow Oscar winner Paolo Sorrentino is attached to direct the feature. Lauren Schuker Blum (Orange Is the New Black), Rebecca Angelo (Wolfman), and John Logan (Rango) are co-writing the script with Erik Feig (Chaos Walking) executive producing. Apple will produce and distribute the picture via their Original Films banner.
The film will tell the real-life story of groundbreaking Hollywood agent Sue Mengers. After entering a talent agency as a receptionist, Menger later broke the glass ceiling as a female agent breaking up Hollywood’s boy’s club. Her client list included Barbra Streisand, Michael Caine, Bob Fosse, Burt Reynolds, among others. After her death in 2011, John Logan turned her life story into a stage play with Bette Midler playing Mengers.
Jennifer Lawrence was the world’s highest-paid actress in 2015 and 2016. Moreover, her films have grossed over $6 billion worldwide to date. Additionally, her role in 2012’s Silver Linings Playbook earned the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, making her the second-youngest Best Actress winner at 22. Most recently, Lawrence reprised her role of Mystique in X-Men: Dark Pheonix. Up next, the actress will star in Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up, opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.
