Universal’s renewed interest in their monster movie franchises has provided fans with exciting new takes on some of cinema’s classic characters. As first reported by Deadline, the studio has enlisted Mad Max: Fury Road star Nicholas Hoult to lead the cast for its highly-anticipated Dracula flick titled Renfield.
Announced in November 2019, Renfield is a monster movie focusing on Dracula’s henchman. Moreover, the film’s original pitch hails from Invincible creator Robert Kirkman. Rick and Morty writer Ryan Ridley is penning the script with Skybound Entertainment producing and distributing. Finally, The Tomorrow War director Chris McKay is on board to helm the feature.
R. M. Renfield first appears in Bram Stoker’s Gothic horror novel Dracula. Renfield is an inmate at the lunatic asylum. He suffers from delusions that compel him to eat living creatures in the hope of obtaining their life force for himself. Previously, reports that Universal was interested in Benedict Cumberbatch playing Dracula in the film surfaced.
Nicholas Hoult’s body of work is extremely vast and includes roles in a bevy of notable franchises. Best known for his roles in the X-Men franchise, Tolkien, and Mad Max: Fury Road, the actor most recently appears in Hulu’s The Great and WB’s survival thriller Those Who Wish Me Dead. Additionally, Nicholas Hoult recently shared screen-time with Samuel L. Jackson and Anthony Mackie in Apple TV’s The Banker as well.
