Sony is continuing to grow its slate of Marvel-centered films as they select some top talent to star in upcoming projects. Back in May, it was revealed that the studio had tapped Tenet star Aaron Taylor-Johnson was returning to his comic book movie roots to portray Kraven the Hunter in the villain’s upcoming solo flick. Now, according to a new report from The Illuminerdi, it appears Sony is currently interested in Queen & Slim star Jodie Turner-Smith for a vital role in the film as well.
Per the initial report, Turner-Smith is in the running to portray Calypso in the movie. Created by Denny O’Neil and Alan Weiss, Calypso Ezili is a voodoo priestess from Haiti who utilizes magic potions. Notably, the Spider-Man villain is also the occasional lover and partner of Kraven the Hunter.
Sony is billing the Kraven project as the next chapter in its universe of Marvel characters. Additionally, Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, and Richard Wenk are writing the screenplay with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach executive producing. Additionally, the studio has recruited Triple Frontier helmer J. C. Chandor to direct the Spider-Man spinoff film.
Following a groundbreaking performance alongside Daniel Kaluuya in Queen & Slim, Turner-Smith is an extremely in-demand actress these days. Recently, the versatile performer appeared alongside Michael B. Jordan in the adaptation of Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse for Amazon. Up next, she leads the cast for Netflix’s upcoming The Witcher prequel series The Witcher: Blood Origin.
