‘Promising Young Woman’ Director Emerald Fennell Tapped To Write DC’s ‘Zatanna’ Movie

Fresh off a historic Oscar nomination, Emerald Fennell is reportedly already eyeing her next big project. This time, the Promising Young Woman director is dipping her toes in the world of DC Comics. As first reported by Variety, Fennell is on-board to pen the script for DC Films Zatanna solo outing.
J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions will produce the film alongside Warner Bros’ DC Films division. The news comes on the heels of the wildly successful release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max. Zatanna joins the current slate of DC projects in various stages of development including The Flash, Wonder Woman 3, and Blue Beetle. While Fennell is confirmed to write the film’s script, it is unclear at this time if she will inhabit the director’s chair when cameras begin to roll.

Created by Gardner Fox and Murphy Anderson, Zatanna was first introduced in 1964’s Hawkman #4. A stage magician with powerful abilities, Zatanna took after her father, Zatara, and used her powers as a hero for good. She has crossed the lines between the main DC universe and Vertigo, much like John Constantine, often serving as a member of both the Justice League and Justice League Dark. Moreover, Zatanna made her first live-action appearance as a recurring character in the final three seasons of Smallville, portrayed by Inhumans star Serinda Swan.
In addition to her groundbreaking work on the Oscar-nominated Promising Young Woman, Fennell also served as showrunner for season two of BBC’s hit series Killing Eve. Additionally, the multi-talented filmmaker touts acting roles in Netflix’s The Crown and the 2015 Hugh Jackman-starring Peter Pan adaptation Pan.
