Warner Bros. and DC Comics are looking to expand their roster of heroes. According to The Wrap, Charm City Kings director Angel Manuel Soto will direct a Blue Beetle feature film.
This will be DC Films and Warner Bros.’ first superhero film starring a Latino character. It will focus on Mexican-American teenager Jaime Reyes who fans of the comics know as the third character to assume the mantle of the Blue Beetle.
Created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hammer, Jaime Reyes first appeared in 2006’s Infinite Crisis #3. After bonding with an alien scarab, Jaime finds he can create a suit of extraterrestrial armor that allows him to fight crime. The suit grants him flight, enhanced strength, energy shields, the ability to create weapons from nothing, and many other abilities.
The screenplay is being written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who wrote Universal’s Scarface remake and Sony’s Miss Bala. The project is reportedly eyeing a fall production start date with Zev Foreman executive producing for Warner Bros.
