Benefitting from a release prior to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, Sonic the Hedgehog is the sixth highest-grossing movie of 2020. Generating a bevy of positive reviews, Paramount Pictures quickly began plotting a course for the sequel. While little is known of what the film will entail, a new report points to the cast beginning to take shape. As first reported by The Illuminerdi, Aquaman star Jason Momoa has been offered a spot in the cast as Knuckles.
Debuting in the Sega Genesis game Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in 1994, Knuckles is a red short-beaked echidna and is often depicted as an adversary of Sonic. However, the character quickly gained popularity and grew a large enough fanbase to get marquee billing in 1994’s Sonic & Knuckles. Knuckles is a staple of the sonic media franchise, appearing in comics, video games, and animated series. Many fans expected him to be a part of the live-action film universe as well and this new report all but confirms his inclusion. However, as always, take this news with a grain of salt until confirmed by the studio.
The upcoming sequel will see Jeff Fowler return as a director with Pat Casey and Josh Miller penning the script. Additionally, Ben Schwartz, who voiced Sonic in the first movie, will also return. Moreover, his co-star James Marsden revealed in March that he had already signed on for multiple Sonic films. Finally, Sega executives Hajime Satomi and Haruki Satomi will serve as executive producers alongside Deadpool director Tim Miller.
Following his star-making turn as the titular character in DC’s Aquaman, Jason Momoa is a household name. The actor also appears extremely excited for a role expansion in the highly anticipated Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Currently, the star appears in Apple TV’s See and will next appear in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune. Additionally, Momoa will star alongside Peter Dinklage in Good Bad & Undead.
