Misha Green To Write & Direct ‘Tomb Raider’ Sequel With Alicia Vikander Returning As Lara Croft

While the weekly offerings of HBO’s Lovecraft Country made household names of Jonathan Majors and Jurnee Smollett-Bell, the series benefitted from the behind the scenes work of showrunner Misha Green. It appears Hollywood is beginning to take notice of her stellar abilities. As first reported by Deadline, Misha Green is on-board to write and direct MGM Studios‘ latest Tomb Raider film with Alicia Vikander returning to portray Lara Croft.
This news will mark Misha Green’s feature directorial debut. Green takes over for the previously announced writer Amy Jump and director Ben Wheatley. Moreover, the upcoming film serves as the sequel to 2018’s Tomb Raider directed by Roar Uthaug with a screenplay by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Alastair Siddon. Additionally, Graham King (Bohemian Rhapsody) will produce the film alongside Elizabeth Cantillon (Charlie’s Angels).

With Alicia Vikander reprising the role, the film will likely continue the plot thread that began in the 2018 outing. During the events of the movie, Lara Croft embarks on a perilous journey to her father’s last-known destination, hoping to solve the mystery of his disappearance. The supporting cast includes Dominic West, Walton Goggins, and Daniel Wu. Additionally, the film serves as a soft-reboot of the Tomb Raider series from 2001 and 2003 starring Angelina Jolie. Alicia Vikander’s initial outing in the role earned $274.7 million worldwide and received mixed reviews from fans and critics alike.
In addition to her role as Lovecraft Country‘s showrunner, Misha Green worked as a staff writer for shows like Heroes and Sons of Anarchy. Moreover, the filmmaker created Underground, a period drama about the Underground Railroad, starring Aldis Hodge and Jurnee Smollett-Bell. Meanwhile, Alicia Vikander is an Academy Award-winning performer thanks to her role in The Danish Girl. Since then, the actor’s résumé includes appearances in films like The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Jason Bourne. Up next, Vikander will star alongside Dev Patel in The Green Knight.
