Emma Thompson & Alisha Weir Join The Cast Of Netflix’s ‘Matilda’ Musical Adaptation

A few weeks ago, reports that Captain Marvel star Lashana Lynch joining Netflix’s Matilda musical hit the internet. Now, as first reported by Deadline, it appears other key characters have been cast as well. Per the initial report, cinematic icon Emma Thompson joins the film as headmistress Trunchbull. Additionally, newcomer Alisha Weir is joining the feature in the starring role of Matilda.
Originally, Harry Potter star Ralph Fiennes was attached to portray Trunchbull, as the character is a male in the source material. However, once he passed, producers sought out the musical veteran Emma Thompson for the role. Fellow Harry Potter alum Pamela Ferris played Trunchbull in the original film while Mara Wilson embodied the titular role.

Based on Roald Dahl’s 1988 novel of the same name, the original film stars Mara Wilson as the title character. The story follows a young genius girl named Matilda Wormwood, who develops psychokinetic abilities and uses them to deal with her disreputable family and oppressive principal. Matilda was directed by cinematic icon Danny DeVito and earned more than $33.5 million at the box office.
The upcoming remake of the film will take a different twist than the 1996 quirky comedy. This time around, the film will be a musical, similar to the stage production debuting in 1988. Matthew Warchus, the director of the stage production, is set to direct. Original playwright Dennis Kelly will adapt the screenplay, with original music and lyrics penned by Tim Minchin. Tim Bevan (Cats) and Eric Fellner (Baby Driver) are on board to produce the picture as well.
