Vince McMahon Documentary Series In Development At Netflix

The single-most prolific name in all of professional wrestling is Vince McMahon. The power-walking corporate giant took the niche genre of entertainment and finagled his way into turning World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) into a publically-traded juggernaut. As first reported by Pro Wrestling Sheet, McMahon will be the focal point of an upcoming documentary series in the works at Netflix.
During a financial earnings call with shareholders, WWE’s President & Chief Revenue Officer, Nick Khan, announced that a multi-installment docu-series about the life and times of Vince McMahon is currently deep in production for Netflix. The series, co-produced by WWE Studios, will reportedly have one of the biggest budgets of any documentary in Netflix history.
McMahon is said to be directly involved in the development of the series. Moreover, 30 for 30 creator Bill Simmons will serve as one of the documentary’s executive producers. However, this is not Simmons’ first foray into the world of professional wrestling. The sports analyst also worked on HBO’s critically acclaimed Andre the Giant documentary. Additionally, Chris Smith, who previously directed Netflix’s Fyre Fest documentary, is also on-board to produce.

Vince McMahon currently serves as the chairman and CEO of WWE. As the infamous story goes, McMahon saw the commercial potential of monopolizing wrestling. After acquiring the World Wide Wrestling Federation from his father, McMahon bought the contracts for wrestlers like Hulk Hogan, forcing small promotions to close. Thanks to the creation and success of ventures like WrestleMania and the WWE Network, McMahon is worth around $1.7 billion. Moreover, McMahon assisted with the launch of the careers of Dwayne Johnson, John Cena, and Dave Bautista.
The upcoming series continues the trend of professional wrestling working its way back into the mainstream. With recent hits like Netflix’s GLOW and the Florence Pugh-starring Fighting With My Family, the industry continues to get more eyes on it. Up next, Thor star Chris Hemsworth will portray Hulk Hogan in an upcoming biopic while Dwayne Johnson is developing a film focusing on Ric Flair‘s life. Additionally, current WWE Smackdown Women’s Champion Sasha Banks will play a role in the second season of Disney+’s The Mandalorian.
