Pixar’s ‘Soul’ To Premiere On Disney+ On Christmas Day

It feels like not a day goes by without unfortunate news that another anticipated feature film is delayed. Amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic, the entertainment industry continues to take hit after hit, specifically movies and movie theaters. As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the lastest big 2020 release to receive a change in its plan is Disney and Pixar’s Soul.
Instead of its expected theatrical release on November 20th, the film will now premiere on the Disney+ streaming service on Christmas Day. Despite the loss the studio will likely take due to the sudden shift, the move is a huge win for the more than 60 million subscribers to Disney+. The streaming service continues to provide a wealth of new and original offerings including The Mandalorian, Hamilton, and Mulan.

However, unlike when Disney moved Mulan from theaters to Disney+, Soul will premiere online with no additional fee to subscribers. Fans who wanted to check out Mulan right away came face-to-face with a $29.99 paywall. Moreover, in areas around the world where Disney+ is not yet available, the latest Pixar film will still release theatrically. A new release date will be unveiled soon.
The highly anticipated animated film will star an A-list ensemble in voice roles. Led by Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey, the cast also touts Questlove, Phylicia Rashad, Daveed Diggs, and Angela Bassett. Helmed by Up and Inside Out director Pete Doctor, the film features a script penned by Docter, Kemp Powers (Star Trek: Discovery), and Mike Jones (Luca). The story follows Joe Gardner, a middle school music teacher with a dream of performing jazz music on stage. However, after finally getting the chance to perform at a well-known club, Gardner meets an untimely death. His soul ventures to the afterlife known as The Great Beyond. However, after an escape, Gardner must earn his way back to Earth for a second chance.
