Cate Blanchett, Tim Blake Nelson, & Finn Wolfhard Join Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pinocchio’

Over the last few months, a few tidbits of news regarding Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio have surfaced. Fans know that production is currently underway, despite COVID-19 restrictions, with the target release date in early 2021. The Netflix feature will include a litany of A-list actors with Ewan McGregor and Ron Perlman already announced. According to a new report from THR’s Borys Kit, Cate Blanchett, Tim Blake Nelson, and Finn Wolfhard are now on board to star in the stop-motion film as well.
Additionally, Burn Gorman (Enola Holmes) and John Turturro will round out the cast all well. The litany of A-list performers will join an ensemble already including Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton, and David Bradley (Harry Potter). The feature will reportedly be a dark, twisted retelling of the famous Carlo Collodi fairytale. The Oscar-winning filmmaker Del Toro began developing the project in 2008 with Netflix acquiring the rights in late 2018.

The director adapted the screenplay from the 1881 Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio alongside Patrick Hale (Adventure Time), Gris Grimly (The Craving), and Matthew Robbins (Jaws). Moreover, CEO of The Jim Hensen Company Lisa Hensen will serve as an executive producer as well.
“We have spent a long time curating a remarkable cast and crew and have been blessed by continuous support from Netflix to quietly and carefully soldier on, barely missing a beat,” said Del Toro in a statement. Additionally, Netflix revealed more information about the film via Twitter.
Set during the rise of Fascism in Mussolini’s Italy, PINOCCHIO — a musical directed by del Toro and Mark Gustafson (FANTASTIC MR. FOX) with a score by Alexandre Desplat — is a story of love and disobedience as Pinocchio struggles to live up to his father’s expectations.
